Why you'll love this trip

  • Connect Shanghai's art deco Bund, Suzhou's Ming-dynasty gardens and Hangzhou's West Lake by 30-minute high-speed train hops — no flying, no rushing across five gentle days.
  • Walk two Ming classical gardens five centuries apart — Shanghai's Yu Garden with its famed Yu Ling Long limestone, and Suzhou's Humble Administrator's Garden, twice the size and the largest in China.
  • Drift through Tongli Water Town's Song-dynasty canals on a sampan, then ride a rickshaw through Suzhou Old Town's white-walled grey-tiled streets the same afternoon.
  • Cruise the Huangpu River past 52 colonial-era façades on the west bank and Pudong's Oriental Pearl skyline on the east, with named-restaurant dinner picks from local guides afterwards.
  • End at Hangzhou's West Lake by boat, then climb to Lingyin Temple and Feilai Peak's 400 carved-rock Buddhas covered in centuries of moss.

Itinerary

01.Art Deco Bund & Ming Garden Opener

2 Days · From a Huangpu Sunset to a Shikumen Lane Dinner

Shanghai
2 Days · 上海

Why it earns its place

Shanghai is the trip's cosmopolitan opener — Ming-dynasty Yu Garden in the morning, art deco granite on the Bund at sunset, 1920s Shikumen lane houses with cafés and studios for dinner.

The trip starts with an unhurried arrival day — your guide collects you at Shanghai Pudong or Hongqiao, drops you at a downtown hotel, and the rest of the afternoon is yours for jet-lag recovery. Day two opens at the Shanghai Museum, where one of China's prestige collections — bronzes, ceramics, jade, Ming-Qing minority clothing — earns its early-morning slot before the crowds. The walk continues into the old town for Yu Garden, a Ming-era Jiangnan classical garden where your guide unpacks the rockery art through Yu Ling Long, the famed "crispy sound of jade" limestone considered one of South China's three most celebrated stones. Free time at Yuyuan Bazaar follows, with xiaolongbao counters around every corner. The afternoon transfers to the Bund for a one-hour Huangpu River cruise, with art deco façades on the west bank and the Oriental Pearl, Shanghai World Financial Center and Shanghai Tower rising on the east. Evening goes to Tianzifang — a 1920s Shikumen lane block reborn as boutiques, art studios and cafés. Dinner can be Shanghai-style noodles at Fu He Mian Guan, a local-favourite spot frequented enough that 30-minute waits are normal at peak. Practical tips: Fu He Mian Guan gets 30-minute waits at peak; go at 11:30 or 14:00 for shorter queues, around ¥45 / $6 per person. The Huangpu cruise is best at blue hour — ask your guide to push the schedule 30 minutes if sunset is late.

02.Water Town & Largest Classical Garden

1.5 Days · Tongli Canals, Ming Pavilions and a Rickshaw Through White Walls

Suzhou
2 Days · 苏州

Why it earns its place

Suzhou is the trip's garden-capital centrepiece — Tongli Water Town's Song-dynasty canals, the largest Ming classical garden in China, and a rickshaw ride through white-walled grey-tiled old town lanes.

Day three begins with a one-hour high-speed train south from Shanghai. Your local Suzhou guide collects you at the station and the trip slows into Jiangnan tempo. After a short rest at the hotel, the afternoon goes to Tongli Water Town — origins traceable to the Song dynasty, with paint-peeling wooden facades, sampans gliding on green canals, and arched stone bridges connecting tiny lanes still lived in by locals. Tongli is the quieter alternative to Zhouzhuang, where tour buses thin out and afternoon photographs come without crowds. The headline of the day is the Humble Administrator's Garden, in Suzhou's northeast. Twice the size of Shanghai's Yu Garden and more original in its Ming architecture, the layout centres on water, with corridor-connected pavilions and halls that frame views through perforated windows. Late afternoon ends with a rickshaw ride through Suzhou's old town — white-walled, grey-tiled low-rise architecture softened by dense vegetation, the visual signature of this part of China. Practical tips: Wear non-slip shoes for Tongli — canal-side flagstones get slippery in damp weather. The Humble Administrator's Garden takes about two hours to walk thoroughly; budget the time and don't rush.

03.West Lake & Carved-Rock Buddhas

1.5 Days · Lake Poetry and 400 Mossy Buddha Carvings

Hangzhou
1 Day · 杭州

Why it earns its place

Hangzhou is the trip's earthly-paradise closer — the lake celebrated in a thousand years of Chinese poetry, plus Lingyin Temple's four-hundred carved-rock Buddhas covered in centuries of moss at Feilai Peak.

Day four opens with a 1.5-hour high-speed train from Suzhou to Hangzhou. After a brief rest at the hotel, your guide takes you straight to the West Lake — there's no better introduction to Hangzhou than from the water. A boat ride drifts past the scenes celebrated in centuries of Chinese poetry: the Su Causeway, Three Pools Mirroring the Moon, willow-lined banks. A few minutes' walk after disembarking brings you to the Red Carp Pond, where small and large red carp swim just below the surface and mandarin ducks roam in lush seasons. The afternoon goes to Lingyin Temple — Temple of Soul's Retreat — one of the ten most renowned Buddhist temples in China, where local worshippers light incense and pray in a quiet rhythm. Facing the temple is Feilai Peak, the Peak Flown From Afar, with more than 400 carved Buddha statues set into rock walls covered in centuries of moss. Dinner can be at Zhao Fu Si Chu on Hefang Street, where 40 years of Hangzhou cuisine specialises in Braised Dongpo Pork, paired with Peach Blossom Wine. Day five is the goodbye morning, with a private transfer to Hangzhou Xiaoshan Airport or onward HSR. Practical tips: Lingyin Temple needs two tickets — temple entry plus Feilai Peak — budget 2.5 hours for both. Zhao Fu Si Chu's Dongpo pork is around ¥60 / $8 per person; ask your guide to book ahead at peak hours.
