Itinerary
01.Imperial Echoes & Mountain Fortresses — Beijing
1 Day · Where 600 years of imperial history meets the Great Wall
Why it earns its place
Beijing concentrates China's imperial grandeur and defensive ingenuity in a single day—from the Forbidden City's 9,999 rooms to the Great Wall winding across mountain ridges, this is where power and protection shaped a civilization.
Your day begins at Tiananmen Square, where one million people can stand at once. The vast expanse sets the scale for what follows: the Forbidden City, the world's largest imperial palace, dwarfing counterparts in Munich, Seville, Istanbul and Tokyo. With your veteran guide, you'll probe the central axis—the Hall of Supreme Harmony, the Palace of Heavenly Purity where emperors lived, and the Imperial Garden. Look up at the plaque reading "Integrity and Brightness" to hear the story of the secret succession box hidden behind it in 1723, a scheme to end brutal infighting among princes. Around midday, your air-conditioned vehicle carries you 1.5 hours north to Mutianyu, where the Great Wall climbs steep ridges in a series of watchtowers. This Ming Dynasty fortification held off northern tribes for centuries—even Genghis Khan struggled here. The included cable car or chairlift bypasses the initial 800 steps, delivering you straight to the core section. Set your own pace: a short walk among a few towers, or the ultimate two-hour push to Watchtower No. 23, the highest point. The signal fire system once transmitted urgent messages—one fire and one cannon meant fewer than 100 enemies; five of each signaled over 10,000 attackers approaching. Descending by cable car or the exhilarating toboggan, you'll wind down with a tea ceremony. A tea artist demonstrates leaf selection, brewing, and the proper way to smell and taste. Five different teas await, each with lingering aftertaste and some with herbal benefits. It's a quiet moment to absorb Chinese tea culture after a day spent walking through history. Practical tips: Book at least 8 days in advance—Forbidden City tickets sell out within seconds of release and require passport information 7 days ahead. Minimize carry items for faster security checks at Tiananmen and the Forbidden City; bring only your passport, water, and a sun hat. No drones, selfie sticks, or flammable sprays. Wear comfortable walking shoes; expect 3-5 km of walking throughout the day, with some stairs at the Forbidden City and optional steep climbs at the Great Wall. Toboggan restrictions: children under 10 need adult accompaniment; visitors 60+, or those with acrophobia, hypertension, or heart disease cannot use the toboggan. Cable car is available for all ages. If your tour falls on a Monday when the Forbidden City is closed, the itinerary substitutes the Summer Palace, a renowned imperial garden.
